However, when I reached out to him this past Monday for an update, he said he would check but hasn't responded since. I called him back with no answer. I'm starting to feel uneasy about the situation, especially since he has cashed my check. I know it hasn't been long, but I expect better communication once money is involved. The contractor has good reviews and we've signed a contract detailing payment terms, so I'm confused about what's going on. Am I overreacting by worrying about this?

You should definitely give him a call from a different number, just to see if you can catch him. When you do, make it clear that you need a firm start date. If he can’t give you one, ask for your deposit back. It’s totally reasonable to want clarity here!
