Contractor Cashed My Deposit but Isn’t Responding—What Should I Do?

I mailed a deposit check to my contractor for a fencing project after we agreed on the work. I sent the check on 04/21, and it cleared shortly afterward. However, when I reached out to him this past Monday for an update, he said he would check but hasn't responded since. I called him back with no answer. I'm starting to feel uneasy about the situation, especially since he has cashed my check. I know it hasn't been long, but I expect better communication once money is involved. The contractor has good reviews and we've signed a contract detailing payment terms, so I'm confused about what's going on. Am I overreacting by worrying about this?

You should definitely give him a call from a different number, just to see if you can catch him. When you do, make it clear that you need a firm start date. If he can’t give you one, ask for your deposit back. It’s totally reasonable to want clarity here!

I feel like you might be overreacting a bit. Do you remember when they mentioned they'd start the work? Some contractors are just really slow on the communication front, but if they’ve been around for a while, they usually come through. I totally understand your frustration though; it can be nerve-wracking waiting for a response!

Right, the contract mentioned they would start after the deposit was paid, which is why I'm anxious. He was super responsive before this, so it's unusual for him not to be in touch now.

Honestly, it might be a scam. The delay is already too long for comfort. If they were serious about starting the work, they’d have reached out right after cashing your check. Leaving an honest review might help as well—if they're legitimate, they'll respond!
