What Certifications Do I Need for Shipping Battery-Powered Devices in NA & Europe?

Hey folks! I'm working on my first hardware project—a basic, battery-operated device that doesn't use any wireless tech like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. I'm planning to get lithium-ion or LiPo batteries (that are RoHS compliant and have built-in safety features, all under 1000mAh) from China and put them into my product. I'm starting off by manufacturing in Canada and will be selling in North America (Canada and the US) first, with hopes of expanding to Europe later on. My main question is: **What safety or compliance certifications do I need to consider when shipping devices with built-in non-removable batteries?** Since I'm a solo founder in the early development stage, I'm looking for advice on how to handle this without breaking the bank. Thanks!

For selling in Europe, your device needs to be certified to meet EU standards and display the CE mark. Depending on what regulations apply, some products can actually be self-certified. In the US, you'll want to look into getting a UL mark, which requires third-party testing. While you don't *have* to get certified to sell in the USA, many retailers and consumers might ask for it. Just something to keep in mind!

That's great to know! I thought certification was mandatory for selling. I’ve seen places like Walmart asking for it in their requirements.

You definitely need to check hazmat regulations. Just a heads up, you can't ship lithium batteries via air. It's a big no-go!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely dig into that.
