I'm looking to add a basic UPS battery backup to my 1/2 HP garage door opener since it doesn't come with one. Has anyone tried this? I'm curious about the wattage needed to lift a single door, especially considering the extreme temperatures in my Canadian garage, which can range from -40C to +30C. Just last week, the grid power was out for 30 hours due to some really strong winds, and I had to break into my garage to reach my backup generator. I want to avoid that hassle in the future!

Just a heads up, most garage door openers without integrated battery backup usually have AC motors, which means they might run slower on battery power if you go that route. If you’ve got a choice, look for an opener designed for battery use.
For a 1/2 HP garage door opener, the continuous draw should be around 375 watts, while the startup current can reach up to 750 watts briefly. Just keep in mind that cold temperatures can affect battery life, so you might need to replace the battery more often in such extreme conditions. Also, it’s a good idea to check the connectors annually for any corrosion. If you're considering batteries, it might be best to stick with lead-acid instead of lithium ion since they can have safety concerns at lower temps.

In case power goes out, don’t forget about those emergency pull cords on garage doors! They allow you to operate the door manually, so you'll be covered even if the opener fails.

Well, considering my side door was blocked when the grid went down, I really need another solution for emergencies. I’m also looking to build a shed for my equipment, but for now, I want to make sure I can access my garage!
