I'm curious if all 18V 7 1/4 circular saws truly require a 12 Amp battery to work their best. I've heard that the rear handle models benefit significantly from this battery size, but I'm not sure if that holds true for other models as well. Any insights?

You don't necessarily need the 12 Amp battery for optimal performance. While being able to push current into the saw is important, any FORGE battery should do fine. The Ah rating mainly indicates how long the battery will run, so even an XC6.0 FORGE battery should be sufficient. But if you want a little extra juice, why not grab an XC8.0 FORGE instead? It's a nice middle ground!
Honestly, the whole idea that you absolutely need the biggest battery can get pretty annoying. If you're trying to save some cash, I totally get it. You shouldn't have to drop a fortune just to get a good saw. It's smart to explore your options!
