I'm planning to renovate the kitchen in my new home, which includes removing the existing kitchen and possibly taking down a wall that has a gas fireplace. Do I really need a general contractor (GC) for this, or can a handyman handle one or both of these tasks? I'd appreciate any advice or insights. Thanks!

Definitely go with a GC for this. You'll need someone with real skills and experience, not just a handyman who's done a few odd jobs. Removing a wall and handling gas lines requires expertise that a handyman simply might not have. Plus, if things go wrong, it can get really costly to fix.
It's best to hire a general contractor for anything structural, especially if it involves removing a wall or dealing with a gas fireplace. GCs have the experience and knowledge to handle these kinds of projects safely. A handyman might be okay for smaller jobs, but I wouldn’t trust them with something that could affect your home’s structure or safety.
