Is Balcony Solar Legal and Practical in California?

I came across an announcement about balcony solar systems becoming legal in California. Can anyone shed light on what specifically makes this possible, both from a legal and technical perspective? Here's a link to the article I found: https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2025/04/25/balcony-solar-comes-to-california/

This isn't the kind of balcony solar like what you might see in those German articles. It's more like conventional solar panels but designed for smaller setups. Unlike the easy plug-and-play balcony systems, these need a professional electrician for installation and involve more complex components.

The difference is the inclusion of a clamp-on PowerMeter, but they still use standard NEMA plugs.

While the whole concept is intriguing, I’m curious about the actual power output of these systems. I couldn’t find any info on their site regarding how much energy they really generate. If the panel size in their promotional materials is accurate, they're likely producing somewhere around 200 to 400 watts. Realistically, that could translate to 1-2.5 kWh daily. Given California's rates at about $0.40/kWh, that only offers $0.40 to $1 in savings per day, yet they're leasing these setups for $39/month. Seems like a stretch to break even unless you buy it for around $1,800, factoring in installation costs too. Could someone clarify if I'm off base?

According to the other commenter, their site mentions 2x 400W panels with installation included and a 30% tax credit option.

I think BrightSaver has already set up some balcony solar systems out in California. They have a pretty detailed overview on their website about how they manage the installation—using licensed electricians and a system to prevent backfeeding. That’s what I gathered from their info anyway!

Yeah, they're pushing those CraftStrom systems, right?
