Why Does Everyone Still Choose Stihl Despite Quality Issues?

As a small engine mechanic running a busy shop that services lawn and garden equipment, I've noticed that a lot of my commercial clients prefer Stihl products. While I recognize that Stihl chainsaws have established a solid reputation, I've seen a decline in their quality in recent years. It makes me wonder why they're still so popular when I've found them to be more complicated to repair, more prone to problems, and tougher to source parts for—plus, those parts tend to be pricier. Yet, my local dealer sells their products rapidly without much inquiry from customers. I'm not trying to start any anti-Stihl sentiments here, I'm just curious about this phenomenon!

It's often the case that quality can drop before a brand’s image does. A lot of consumers might not even notice the decline until it becomes a pattern. Sometimes, people are slow to change their views on products they've trusted for years, even if they start having issues.

I've had the same feeling! I switched from Stihl to Husqvarna a while back because of ongoing issues with my trimmer. I was just tired of the repairs and costs piling up with Stihl products. My experience with Husqvarna has been much smoother, to be honest.

It's similar to fashion trends! Initially, something can be seen as a great value, then brands can compromise quality while jacking up prices and capitalizing on their reputation. It often takes years for public perception to shift, especially for something like chainsaws that people don’t replace every year. Personally, I've got my Stihl MS261, and it's been great, but I see where you're coming from with the maintenance issues. I really feel you on that!

Absolutely, I've noticed that chainsaw reliability really varies. My old Stihl chainsaw has had its troubles, but the reliability of other brands makes you think twice, for sure!

I think brand reputation plays a huge role. In my area, everyone seems to use Stihl, creating a sort of herd mentality. Even if I find my own Stihl trimmer a bit finicky compared to my older Husqvarna, the backpack blower has been rock-solid. Maybe it’s just familiarity!

Old habits die hard, I guess? Brands like Stihl have a long-standing reputation that’s tough to shake even if their quality dips. Based on personal experience, I’d suggest considering other brands that might be more reliable these days, but it's hard to tell people to switch when they’ve been using Stihl for so long.
