Help! My Garage Is a Sauna – Should I DIY a Mini Split AC?

Hey everyone! I've set up a small workshop in my garage, but it's super hot in there, especially during the summer months. I was thinking about getting a mini-split air conditioner since I found some decent deals online. I'm also considering installing it myself to save some cash, but I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff. What do you all think? Is it better to go for it and DIY, or should I hire a contractor instead? Any advice would be appreciated!

As someone who's worked in HVAC for a decade, I'd recommend sticking with a window unit. Those Mr. Cool DIY mini-splits look cool, but you'll need professional tools that could be a pain to buy for just this project. If you really want a mini split, definitely get quotes from local HVAC contractors, but aim for a middle-tier quote for a better installation and warranty.

Honestly, if you can swing it, a window AC unit might be a better option. Mini splits can be pretty pricey and tricky to install. They're not exactly a walk in the park, especially if you're not experienced.

You could also consider a portable unit that vents out the window. It might be easier to set up!

It really comes down to how comfortable you are with DIY projects. Some of the new mini-splits are designed to be user-friendly and easy to install. Just keep in mind, you might need to evacuate the lines and do some wiring, which can be tricky.
