I'm building a custom potting bench for my wife as a Mother's Day gift. The design is meant to be mounted in our garage with hinges, so it can fold flat against the wall when not in use. She wants a solid tabletop that doesn't need to look fancy. I'm considering materials like thick plywood, OSB, or MDF, but I also need to create a hole in the top for an under-mounted bin to sweep dirt into. I want it to be durable and not rot out in a few years. I'm also open to using a vinyl cover to protect the surface. Any advice on which material would work best?

How about getting a scrap vanity top instead? They're usually covered in Formica and often come with a sink hole already in place. It’s cheap, not the prettiest, but totally functional for your needs!
