Hey everyone! I recently visited a famous local garden and spotted a pretty large patch of Japanese knotweed right next to the walking path, and there was no barrier or sign to prevent trampling. It's concerning because I remember seeing it there back in 2024, but I didn't notice it at the time. Given the amount of work that goes into maintaining this garden, I find it hard to believe they haven't spotted it. I'm hesitant to report it directly, as I'm worried it might backfire on me later if I need to take it to the authorities. What do you all think I should do?

Just to clarify, trampling isn’t a great way to spread knotweed. It mainly spreads through root pieces, not just by stomping on it. Plus, the strain we have here doesn’t even produce seeds! But yeah, keep in mind that stem fragments can also propagate. It's definitely a tricky one with how it can spread along paths.
It's not actually illegal to have knotweed on your property unless you let it spread. They should definitely be on top of managing it, so there's no real need to alert any authorities. If you’re comfortable, you might want to casually ask them how they’re handling the knotweed situation. They could just be waiting for the right time to tackle it—like cutting it down in June and spraying any regrowth later in the summer. No point in making it a big confrontation!
