What’s Cheaper to Build Than Buy (Excluding High-End Furniture)?

I'm not the best woodworker, mainly using my tools for quick repairs and simple projects like projector screens, step stools, and garden planters. I've mostly been using salvaged Douglas fir wood, which might take some time to resaw, but it's a fun way to use the tools I have. Generally, I find that building these items is cheaper than buying, but I'm curious about other people's experiences. Have you found specific items that are more cost-effective to build rather than buy, even when considering the cost of materials? I'm especially looking for things outside of high-end furniture. Also, considering my area has higher labor costs for home repairs, I can often find DIY projects to be much more economical. What about you guys?

For me, it's less about saving money and more about gaining skills. Initially, I might be over budget compared to shopping, but the skills I learn really add value over time. Plus, there's nothing like having exactly what you want, built just for your space!

Absolutely! Your perspective makes a lot of sense. It's an investment in both time and skill.

Anything that needs a custom size is often cheaper to build yourself. It's tough to beat the prices from stores like IKEA or Wayfair because they buy in bulk and automate a lot of their processes. But if you're looking at custom furniture, your own labor is free, so that's a win!

Thanks! It's important to compare the right things and not just assume everything is cheaper to buy.

From my experience, I tend to spend about the same amount in the end. Like when I built cornhole boards, I didn't buy any wood since I had it, but I had to get all the hardware and other supplies. It was a fun project, but I ended up spending over $100!

Totally agree! The enjoyment comes from making it yourself, even if it costs a bit more.
