Is Porous Rubber or Cellulose Mulch a Good Idea?

Has anyone tried using porous rubber or materials with a cellulose-like structure as mulch? I'm curious, especially since many of us have garden beds with specific shapes, and I thought about using towers with pockets for planting. Regular mulch tends to mix into the soil, which I find frustrating. I'm wondering if something like porous rubber could help with soil temperature control. I know rubber is a natural material, but I've heard of microrubber and its potential negative effects. What do you think? Has anyone experimented with similar materials?

Stay away from using rubber. You'll create a situation where microplastics can harm your plants over time as the materials break down. It's best to opt for more natural solutions for your gardening!

That specific product you're looking at isn't durable for outdoor use. It's made from polypropylene and will degrade quickly under UV light unless it's treated with a UV-resistant coating.

Using rubber as mulch isn't a great idea. It can leach harmful chemicals into the soil, which is risky if you're growing food. Plus, you need to let moisture pass through to keep your soil healthy. Regular organic mulch is best as it breaks down, nourishes the soil, and doesn’t contaminate it. Consider alternatives like leaves or pine needles instead—they’re much better for your garden!

I haven't personally tried porous materials like that, but there are biodegradable options available, like paper mulch or cornstarch-based weed barriers. I'd steer clear from using plastic or rubber, though!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into biodegradable options.

Coco coir liners might be a viable option, but they can be pricey. I tend to use gardening paper for my needs, and while it turns to a crumbled mess by summer, I find that works alright for what I'm doing.
