When’s the Best Time to Start Tomatoes Indoors?

I'm in Zone 7b and last year, I direct sowed my cherry tomatoes in May, and they soared to about 10 feet tall, producing tons! This year, I want to start my Sungold tomatoes indoors. What's the ideal time to begin this process? I have great summer conditions outside and a solid grow light setup indoors. Any recommendations on when I should start? Thanks a lot!

Hey there! I'm in Delaware, which is Zone 7a. When it comes to starting indoors, it depends on how large you want your plants before putting them outside. I'm planning to start mine next week, so if you're aiming for around March 5th, that sounds like a good timeline! Just give them plenty of space to grow in larger pots.

Awesome, thanks! That works perfectly with my schedule.

In my Zone 8b area in Texas, I kick off indoor planting by the end of January. By mid-March, they're ready to go outside. I prefer starting with larger transplants since I don't have to fuss with them too much once they’re in the ground.

I’m also in Zone 7b, but in France. I usually start my tomatoes about two months before I plant them outside, which is around mid-March. I avoid starting them too early since the nights can still be chilly until mid-May. I don’t use grow lights, but keep them in a warm and moist environment until they sprout, then I move them to a bright spot and acclimate them gradually.
