I'm looking for suggestions on what to plant in a shared planter that measures a few meters wide, long, and about 3 feet deep. My friend's planter currently has some mint, and they're considering adding herbs like rosemary. However, they're also dealing with a rat problem. Are there any plants that could potentially deter rats while thriving in a soil environment that has lots of digging and holes? The planter doesn't get much sunlight due to the tall surrounding houses.

Lavender works well, too. I stocked up on it when I noticed rats around my garden. It really helped keep them from burrowing close to my house. You could also try mint-scented plants! I've read that onions, garlic, daffodils, marigolds, and even chrysanthemums are effective as well. You could create a beautiful display with that mix!
Catnip is definitely a good choice! I read that it can help deter rats. I’m also curious if anyone has other interesting plants—edible or not—that do well in similar situations. Would love to hear your stories!

Capsaicin is another deterrent I’ve found effective, but just be careful as it can suppress some plants if you sprinkle it directly on the soil. Herbs are fantastic for this kind of situation—they’re low maintenance and attract pollinators, which is a bonus. Just make sure you avoid planting anything toxic, like daffodils, especially if it's a community space!
