I'm looking for places to find either free or inexpensive wood for carving. I want to avoid relying on online orders, but the only free wood I come across tends to be pretty low quality. Any suggestions on where to look or how to source better wood?

Check out construction sites or dumpsters; you can often find good wood there. Look for dimensional lumber like 2x6 to 2x10 pine—it can be a goldmine for smaller carvings, but you may need to sift through quite a lot. Just be prepared to negotiate a bit with contractors for the best pieces!
Furniture shops are a great resource! They usually have lots of offcuts that they’d be happy to give away. Just ask around and see what they have available.
Don’t forget to check the free sections on Facebook and Craigslist! You might find people giving away old furniture that you can salvage wood from. Also, take a drive around on trash day—old desks or bed frames can be great for carving!
