Should My Girlfriend and I Bring Gifts When Meeting Our Parents for the First Time?

I'm really excited because I'm about to meet my girlfriend's parents for the first time. We're both flying down to visit each other's families soon. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to bring a gift for her parents when we meet. Should I bring something in my carry-on for them? Or should she bring something too? I've heard it's respectful to show up with something, but my mom says it might be tough for us to bring gifts given our travel situation. I just want to make a good first impression for both sides! Any advice on what might be appropriate to bring or if we even need to bring anything at all?

You could keep it simple with something like a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates if you're not sure what they like. It's a good idea to chat with your girlfriend to find out more about her parents' preferences, as well as what your own family enjoys.

However, it's also completely fine to arrive empty-handed since it's not a strict rule, especially if gifts aren't expected.

Totally agree! Even a small gesture works. If they enjoy drinks, a nice bottle of wine or spirit does the trick! If not, maybe something local like homemade snacks or crafts would be appreciated.
