Dealing with Soil Crusting in Raised Beds: What to Do?

Hey everyone! I've noticed that my raised beds, which have a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost, are developing some soil crusting. I'm wondering if I should break it up, give it a good watering, and then add some lawn clippings or other mulch to prevent it from happening again? What do you all think?

Absolutely, breaking up the crust is a good first step. After that, adding mulch is a must! Straw works really well because it eventually breaks down and enriches the soil. You could also consider using shredded leaves or grass clippings for a similar effect.

Yeah, definitely mulch it! It keeps the moisture in and helps prevent crusting. I personally like using shredded leaves or straw. Just make sure you get it spread out nicely over the top!

For sure, mulch is key! You might want to try compost too, it can do wonders for your soil health. Just keep it a couple inches thick to really help out.
