I have a large asphalt driveway that's 12 feet wide and about a quarter-mile long, totaling around 21,000 square feet. It's in need of sealing, but there are also some significant cracks that require filling. The previous owners used water-based sealers every five years and handled crack maintenance with a mix of patching methods. I can't afford to completely tear it out and re-pave it right now, so I'm considering a DIY sealing approach. I'm wondering if roofing asphalt mixed with construction sand would work for filling 1/2" to 1" wide cracks before I seal the driveway. What do you all suggest?

It depends on how many large cracks you have. For filling, something like asphalt caulk or 'Speed Fill' could be a better fit than roofing asphalt, which might not hold up well under the traffic on your driveway.

Most of the cracks are under 1” wide but stretch out over several feet. There's one particularly wide crack across the driveway I’ll tackle with pre-mix gravel/asphalt and used a mini-roller for compaction. Just so you know, the driveway is also on a slope with some curves.
