I've got 10 tables, each measuring 10' x 5', that need some refinishing in my lab. They're way too big and heavy to move outside, and I want to make sure the lab stays dust-free. What are the best methods or tools I can use to sand these large surfaces while keeping the dust to a minimum? I'm open to spending money, so cost isn't an issue. Would a hand plane be a better choice for this situation, especially given that the table legs are flush with the tops?

Using a cabinet scraper might be the way to go for most of the sanding, then finish off with a sanding block. Make sure to drape visqueen around your work area and set up a portable air filter to capture dust effectively.
If you're not worried about the budget, consider building a dust-collecting enclosure around your sanding area. Make sure to wear proper PPE, and go for a big orbital sander to tackle the job. After sanding, just vacuum up the dust to keep everything clean.
Hand tools definitely create less dust, so try starting with a plane or scraper for the rough parts. I’ve heard the Festool sander and dust collection combo works wonders, though it's on the pricier side. Another option is to make a sanding booth using PVC and painter's plastic, but don’t forget your respirator!
