I'm planning to set up a play area for my little one in the garden, but the only flat space available doesn't get much sun and drainage is a concern. I'm looking for advice on whether it's better to layer sand, a weed membrane, and mulch or to go with a weed membrane, sand, and mulch. Additionally, I'm open to any other suggestions for making a child-safe area with good drainage.

Honestly, I’d recommend skipping the plastic membrane. I’ve spent all summer trying to remove a mess from the previous owners. Instead, consider laying down some cardboard first, then topping it with wood chip mulch for a non-grassy play area. It might be worth checking with others for their thoughts too!

But won't the cardboard break down after a couple of years? I'm a bit hesitant since we can't just grow grass here.
