Hey folks, I have some peonies in my yard that I didn't plant; they were there when I bought my house eight years ago. I'm new to gardening and just realized that these little plants are around nine years old, but they seem very thin and weak. Lately, I've been observing them, but the flowers aren't opening at all. They look pretty sealed up. I think the lack of sun might be the problem since they're mostly shaded by pine trees and my house. Would it help to transplant them to a sunnier spot? I care about making my yard look nice, especially after planting some rose bushes. I'm located in northeast PA, and I want to make sure these peonies flourish!

It sounds like your peonies might just need some patience! I've got a garden in SE PA (zone 7a) and only one of my peonies has opened so far. Sometimes they just take their time, and there's not much you can do to rush them. Just give them some time, and they might surprise you!
Ants actually help peonies open up, but if yours are really thin, that can be a concern. I noticed you mentioned they're not very big for their age. Maybe consider moving them to a sunnier spot if you can. More sunlight can definitely help them grow stronger and bloom better!

Yeah, I’ve seen tons of ants all over the few flowers, but it's the thinness of the plant that worries me more. I’ll definitely think about upgrading their location to get some sun.
