What’s Your Biggest Frustration When Hiring Plumbers or HVAC Techs?

Asked By HomeFixHero82 On

I've had a few home repairs that left me doubting the fairness of the deals I was getting and whether the diagnoses were accurate. I'm thinking of creating a simple online tool to make this process smoother for homeowners, but I'd love to hear experiences from others first. What's your number one pain point when hiring a plumber or HVAC technician? Is it about pricing, communication, trust, or something else? Your honest input would be really beneficial!

I find it infuriating when techs who are really salespeople come to diagnose issues instead of actual skilled tradespeople. They focus on selling you a whole new system instead of solving the problem. Plus, what's with these huge quote inconsistencies? It's hard to figure out who to trust when everyone's prices and recommendations are all over the place.

And all that fear mongering is just draining. They make you feel like if you don’t spend more, you’re risking disaster. It's exhausting!

Totally agree! I've received wildly different scopes of work from multiple companies, and it makes everything so confusing. It's like they assume we're all clueless.

One major frustration is that there are tools like Angie's List, but they're filled with fake companies that just subcontract everything. Finding reliable local contractors is almost impossible. Honestly, it feels like they're just trying to make a quick buck instead of providing quality service.

Yeah, I used Angi too and it was terrible. They just focus on greed and often mislead. There has to be a better way to find good help online.

I've ditched Angie's List for Nextdoor. Not perfect, but for actual contractor recommendations, it seems to work better.

Upselling is a huge issue for me. I called in a tech for a furnace check and they wanted to sell me a $49 quarterly package just to change my filters. Seriously? If I'm paying for a visit, I expect a straightforward service, not a sales pitch.

On the AC side, it's super annoying when companies push for a full system replacement instead of fixing the actual problem. I had a tech suggest I replace my system for a lizard-related issue that turned out to be a simple fix for under $2000. Others tried to give me a $10,000 quote! It just feels like they're more interested in maximizing their profits than actually helping.
