I'm planning to build a pair of end tables that feature tops that open up for additional storage, but I'm not satisfied with the sliding mechanisms I've come across. My idea is to use UHMW tape on both the top side of the upper rails and the underside of the table top, allowing them to slide against each other. I will also set up guides to keep everything in line. My concern is that, since I'm working with a 12"x24"x½" thick slate tile mounted on a ¾" MDF, it might be too heavy. Will the UHMW tape enable smooth and practical sliding? Also, will it be easy enough to slide without the risk of spilling a drink that might be sitting on the table?

You might want to consider using gloss laminate on the underside of the MDF and sticking with UHMW tape on the upper rails. That way, you’ll get a smoother surface for sliding. If you mount the laminate to the rails instead and keep the UHMW on the MDF base, you could integrate your guides better. Just keep in mind the orientation of the UHMW—the sliding piece versus the stationary piece could impact performance.
PTFE tape could be another good option to think about. It’s slicker than UHMW but might not hold up as well over time. It really depends on the weight your tabletop will carry. If the slate tile weighs around 20 lbs, UHMW should handle it fine, but just be cautious about how often you’ll be opening it. May want to factor that into your choice!
