I'm wondering if I can just apply primer and paint directly onto my wooden bookshelf without any sanding. It has a bit of an odor, kind of like patchouli or cleaning products, which is why I feel the need to paint it. Right now, it's wrapped up in newspaper, so I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice?

If your bookshelf is smooth, it likely has a protective coating already. Lightly sanding it will really help for better adhesion. You might not even need primer unless you’re trying to mask the current color. Just keep in mind, if you want the grain to disappear, you’ll want to sand it more and consider using a filler too!
I've heard from several landlords that sanding is a must for these kinds of projects. Just saying, I've seen a lot of disappointed DIYers trying to skip that step!
Wait, are you referring to the not sanding advice?
You really need to sand it if you want the paint to stick well. A light sanding with 220 grit paper is best to remove any impurities that might prevent the primer from adhering properly. Plus, after sanding, make sure to clean it with a degreaser and let it dry completely before you start painting.
I guess I’d better set aside some time for that!
How long does it usually take to do light sanding by hand?

I thought primer might help cover up the smell I’m dealing with.
