I'm gearing up to plant some pumpkin varieties, but my space is a bit cramped since I have a full-blown squash obsession. I want to keep things tidy without having to mow around my pumpkins and gourds. I have some leftover landscaping fabric from when I used it to protect an area under a raised bed. Can I lay it down where the pumpkins will spread out and let them grow on top? The fabric is black and non-woven, but I'm worried about whether it might damage the pumpkins, especially with the hot Ohio sun. Any advice?

I personally wouldn’t recommend using landscaping fabric for pumpkins. It can really trap heat, especially in the sun, and that could end up baking the plants. Plus, it might not be great for the soil health down the line. I usually just let the pumpkins sprawl naturally and mow where it’s needed, even if it looks a bit wild!
It sounds like you’re just trying to keep the area manageable! While the fabric helps keep weeds down, it might not be the best choice in hot weather. If you decide to go with it, just keep an eye on the pumpkins. If you want a cleaner look without the fabric, regular mowing and good mulch could help!
I actually have a similar problem with squirrels planting my pumpkins all over the place. I find landscaping fabric to be the worst; it doesn't really keep things tidy in my experience. If you're looking to keep your yard neat, I'd suggest finding another way—maybe some mulch instead?
Totally get that! I've tried the fabric, and it didn't work out well for me either. Better to let those pumpkins enjoy the earth and spread out freely.
