I'm crafting a height chart to track my kids' growth using a simple 1x4 board. You might want to use a speed square for the measurements and either a circular saw or a router with a V-bit to make the actual marks. But a quick tip: instead of marking every inch (which can look cluttered), just go for a full line at every foot, a half line for the halfway point, and maybe a quarter line for the other increments. It keeps it clean and easy to read!
Also, have you considered using self-adhesive tape measures? They can give you clean and accurate markings without the mess.
