What Vegetables Can Thrive in Morning Sun and Afternoon Shade on a Patio?

I'm looking for some advice on what vegetables can grow on my apartment patio, which gets direct sunlight in the morning but goes into shade by the afternoon. I live in the DC area and need to use containers since that's all I have space for. I'm considering options like lettuce and Swiss Chard, but I also want to know if strawberries (though not a veggie), certain peppers, or even zucchinis would work in this setup. I'm tight on space and budget, so I'd like to focus on one or two veggies that have the best chances of thriving. I've also thought about growing some herbs like basil and oregano. Any recommendations?

Your greens like lettuce, arugula, and spinach should do really well in your setup! Carrots, radishes, leeks, garlic, potatoes, and onions are great options too. Just a heads-up, strawberries prefer a lot of sun, so they might not produce well with just morning light. If you're feeling adventurous, you could try green beans—just make sure they have enough space to climb. Happy gardening!

I totally get the space and budget crunch! Salad greens will thrive under those conditions. Carrots are a solid pick, and they don’t need much room. As for herbs, basil and oregano are excellent choices too, especially since they can grow well in containers. Just remember to water them adequately since containers can dry out faster!
