Need Help with My Overgrown Garden!

Hi all! I'm super new to gardening and I've really let my garden go over the past two years. I've only been mowing it when absolutely necessary, and now it's a wild mess, especially one area that's just overrun with tall weeds. I'm looking for guidance on how to start tackling this. Should I cut everything down and then apply weedkiller, or is it better to try and remove the weeds first before applying any treatments? I appreciate any advice you can share because I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now. Thank you!

It really depends on what kind of weeds you’re dealing with! Pull up easier ones like sticky weed, but tough ones like brambles will need to be dug out. Also, watch out for any critters hiding in there. Start by trimming down everything, and then you can mow to level it out. Consider a no-dig method with cardboard and compost to smother the weeds; it’s worked wonders for me!

I totally get feeling overwhelmed! I went through the same thing. My approach was to chip away at the problem—a little at a time. I’d spend just 10 minutes a day on one section and slowly made progress over a few weeks. It’s satisfying to see even a small section clear up!

Skip the weedkiller—it’s not really the best approach here. Start by cutting back what you can, then dig out the roots. Once you’ve done that, turn the soil to create a clean slate for your garden. You can then plan your new layout without the hassle of weeds getting in the way.
