A friend of mine is looking to create her own digital library with shows, movies, and even some books, which sounds really cool! She plans to store everything on a 2TB external hard drive, but I'm a bit concerned about that. Is it a good idea to use an external drive for this purpose? What are some safer or easier alternatives for storing digital content?

Every storage device can fail, really. It’s not just external drives that can go haywire; any medium can. What’s important is having a solid backup plan. Just one drive is risky. Maybe advise her to have backups in place!
Consider setting up a NAS (Network Attached Storage) if she’s serious about this. I use one and it’s fantastic for storing and accessing media without worrying about a single point of failure. Just a thought!
Totally fine to use externals! I've got a few myself, mostly for backups. I keep my media and documents on them without issues. Just a tip though: for the data you need all the time, consider using internal drives! They tend to be quicker and more accessible. But no worries, external drives work great for storage too!
Yeah, I had an external die on me during college, so I get the concern! I definitely think they're good for backups, though.
