I'm getting ready for my second growing season and will be reusing soil for the first time. I'm curious about the best way to amend it for containers and grow bags. Is it effective to use store-bought fertilizers? How long can I typically reuse the soil before needing to replace it? I've used Black Kow and worm castings in the past, but I'm wondering if they work just as well in grow bags as they do in raised beds, especially since there may be fewer microbes present. Thanks! ❤️

I've been experimenting with my soil mix for containers. Here's my go-to formula:
- 52% soilless mix (like Miracle-Gro potting soil)
- 33% compost
- 4% biochar
- 4% pumice
- 7% perlite
- Fertilizer as per instructions
- A Myke inoculant for added microbes.
You can simplify it by skipping the biochar and pumice, and just using 15% perlite. If you're into worm composting, you could use the spent soil mixture as bedding for worms. It’s a bit of work but upcycles your soil nicely!
Great question! A simple way to amend your reused soil is by mixing in some fresh compost. You can either layer it on top or blend it in thoroughly. It really helps refresh the nutrients!
I usually dump my soil from the bags into a pile and mix in some Black Kow and worm castings. I find a ton of earthworms in there! I typically use about 3/4 of that mixture and then top it off with fresh outdoor potting soil. Works like a charm!
