I've got a pocket door that was installed about five years ago, and it's driving me nuts. Every time I slide it open or closed, it makes this horrible 'thud' sound, and it kind of swings as it moves instead of gliding smoothly. I think the contractor messed up the installation. It sounds like your door might be wider at the ends than in the middle. Try adding a thin strip of wood to the bottom edge to make it uniform. That should help it glide better past the guides!
I noticed my pocket door had adjustable guides at the bottom to limit side-to-side movement. Make sure yours are set right, or the door might be bouncing off the guides, causing that thud sound. They should be just touching the door without any gap.
That makes sense! I definitely need to check if mine are spaced correctly.
