Hey everyone! I'm looking to set up a solar system here in Western Massachusetts that can meet my energy needs. I've been getting quotes from installers, but the monthly payments would exceed my current electric bill. My solar energy usage varies between 700 and 1100 kWh.
Since my roof isn't suitable and will probably need replacement in the next decade, I'm considering a ground-mounted system with battery backup while staying grid-connected. Although I work in the trades, I lack experience in electrical work and excavation. Luckily, I have acquaintances who are electricians and even a couple of solar installers who can assist with the wiring, but I don't want to rely too heavily on them for every detail.
I'm juggling parenting my adorable 2-year-old son, studying for my unrestricted Construction Supervisor License, and managing a large garden to support my local shelter.
I've already chosen the REC 420W AA pure panels I want, but I still need help with: 1. Selecting the right ground mounts, 2. Choosing the best micro inverters, and 3. Writing a plan and getting the necessary permits. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!

Regarding your plans, you might want to consider hiring a design service. For around $300-500, they’ll create a complete planset tailored to your specifics, which can save you a lot of headaches. Trying to craft a planset by yourself can be tricky, especially if you're not experienced with CAD software. You’ll definitely need key components like single line electrical plans, mounting details, and perhaps even an engineer's stamp for inspection approval.
For your setup, it's common that pro installers use micro inverters while DIYers lean towards string inverters, especially for off-grid systems. Essentially, you need to decide whether you want to follow the DIY route with potentially more manageable string inverters or opt for micro inverters that might require more professional insight. Just a heads-up, the DIY community isn't as big for micros!

Or are you considering leasing the panels? If it's a loan, keep in mind that as long as you're producing enough power, your electric bill should mainly consist of connection charges. However, remember that if you don't have a licensed electrician sign off on your install, you could run into some issues during the inspection.
I'm referring to paying off the loan, and like I mentioned, I will have an electrician handling the wiring.
