I'm looking for advice on how to gracefully turn down a job estimate when I've already gone to check it out. There are no scheduling issues or other commitments—I'm just not interested in taking on the project. Any tips?

You might want to let them know that your team isn't available for the project right now. It can help to suggest a couple of other companies in the area that might be able to assist them. That way, you're being helpful while also stepping back from the job.
Honestly, sometimes the easiest route is just to ghost them. They've likely experienced this before. But if you feel bad about it since they’re kind of a family friend, maybe just be upfront and tell them you're not interested. It's better to be honest than to leave them hanging.
If you really don't want to take it, you could throw out a super high quote. That way, if they accept, at least you're compensated well for it—even if it’s just a 'screw you' number! Plus, it might just scare them off completely!
I totally get that! I just raised my prices for similar reasons. It was either that or I needed a break from work, and getting paid more seems like the better option!
