I'm trying to drill a 2-inch hole in the dirt outside for a point well. I've already dug down about 8 feet, but now I need to drill down another 5 to 8 feet to check for water before deciding if I should start pounding or keep digging. Any tips or tools you recommend for this? It's worth noting that hiring a normal well service is really pricey (around $30k for 300 feet), so I'm trying to explore my options before going that route.

A gas-powered auger would be a solid choice to help you drill a bit deeper. Just make sure to reinforce the walls of the hole to avoid any collapses—safety first!
Consider using an auger bit for your drill. There's also a nice 2-cycle ground auger (I think it's Vevor) that comes with a 2.5-inch auger and can go about 6 feet deep for around $200. Just keep in mind, working in a hole can be really dangerous if the walls aren't supported!
