How to Prevent Wood Knots from Showing Through Paint on Bead Board?

Asked By CraftyNinja93 On

I recently had a contractor install wooden bead board in my new bathroom and painted it white. It looked amazing initially, but now the wood knots are starting to peek through the paint. Is there a thicker paint, or any specific type of primer that could help cover them before applying another layer of white paint?

To solve the problem with those pesky knots, I'd recommend using a stain-blocking primer. Zinsser BIN is a top choice since it's shellac-based and really does the trick. You could also go for an oil-based primer, which works well too. Finish off with a couple of coats of your regular paint, and you should be good!

Do I need to apply the primer over the entire wall or just the knot spots?
