Hey everyone! My fiancé and I just moved into a fixer-upper and found an amazing garden spot that was completely taken over by invasive blackberries. We cleared those out, but now we're left with a garden full of grass and weeds from the previous owner. The old planting boxes are rotting, so we want to plant directly into the ground. I'm considering using Round Up to kill the weeds before tilling, but I've heard mixed reviews on it. Can I safely plant soon after spraying? Or should I skip the chemicals altogether? What's the best way to tackle this grassy mess? I know it's getting late in the season for my zone, but we're just trying to make the most of it this year!

I'd steer clear of Round Up if you're planning to plant soon. Instead, try putting down a black plastic tarp for a few weeks to smother the grass and weeds. You might want to rent a sod cutter to remove the grass layer before tilling it all up. Remember, if you just till without getting rid of the weeds first, you'll end up with a garden full of them! Thanks for the tip! I have compost ready to go. If I till the grass, could I use cardboard or a barrier before adding back the soil? Just wondering if the grass will come back from that tilled soil?
