We're in the process of transforming our yard into a low-maintenance gravel garden, mostly to avoid lawn upkeep. However, we still want to incorporate some greenery, ideally with a Japanese garden theme in mind. We're considering using fake outdoor plants, particularly non-flowering ones. Any advice on this? Thanks!

I would suggest checking out some native conifers or other low-maintenance plants instead of fake ones. Fake plants can look nice for a bit, but they often don't hold up well over time and contribute to plastic waste. Plus, you want your garden to reflect nature, right?
Using fake flowers in window boxes can actually look pretty nice if you do it right! A friend of mine filled hers with some decent faux flowers and real dirt, and they looked great, especially in the summer. If you find some lifelike options, it can give your space a nice boost without any maintenance.
Xeriscaping could be a great option for you! It focuses on low-water plants and is really manageable. I’m also minimizing my regular plants, and using gravel and stone has made a world of difference. You can still have a beautiful look without all the hassle.
Totally agree! Xeriscaping offers loads of options that suit your local climate without needing constant care. It's worth looking into!

That sounds like a clever idea! I've seen it done well too, and it really brings life to a garden without the upkeep.
