How Can I Lower Humidity in My Crawl Space?

Asked By ChillPanda123 On

I'm dealing with high humidity problems in my home. The outdoor humidity is 35% at 79°F, but my bottom floor is sitting at 60% humidity and 68°F. I really dislike humidity and am worried about potential mold growing. Since I have a crawl space foundation, I'm wondering if installing dehumidifiers down there is a good idea. Should I also put plastic sheeting under the floor framing to help with moisture control?

Definitely go for a dehumidifier! It's one of the best solutions for reducing humidity in your crawl space. Just make sure to invest in a quality unit, as cheaper ones tend to break down quickly. I personally bought one with a pump, so it automatically drains when it fills up, which saves me the hassle of emptying it all the time.

That's great advice! Having a pump feature is super convenient.

Yeah, don’t skimp on it. A good dehumidifier is worth it.

Before you jump to dehumidifiers, consider laying down a vapor barrier if you haven't already. That should really help in managing moisture. After that, if it’s still humid, then a dehumidifier would be a good backup plan!

I'm cautious about doing that since I worry about water getting trapped under plastic during winter. Do you think that’s a valid concern?

I understand. Just make sure the area is properly graded and prepared.
