I'm planning to install a water softener that has a 1-inch diameter connection, but my house's water pipe is only 1/2 inch. I'm thinking of using a converter for this. Is this common practice? Is this setup typical, especially considering my house is around 30 years old?

I've had the same setup for 12 years, and I've had no problems at all. It's pretty standard to have different sizes, so you should be fine!
Just a heads up, larger pipes mean more flow but can be pricier to install and maintain. Usually, builders go smaller to save on costs. Only big houses or those with sprinklers commonly have larger feeds nowadays.
This is pretty normal. Most residential water pipes are 1/2" or 3/4", so transitioning to 1" is typically not a problem. It might be a bit tricky finding the right fittings, but it shouldn't be hard.
Thanks! I noticed it's tough to find direct converters from 1/2" to 1".
No worries at all! It's totally normal to see that kind of difference in sizes. You'll be good to go with your converter.
Thanks for the reassurance!

Thanks, that's a relief! I thought I might have messed something up.
