I have a metal water pipe that connects to my water heater and goes through the wall horizontally. The drywall around it is in pretty rough shape, and I want to patch it up with some putty. My question is whether I should apply putty directly onto the pipe itself to eliminate any gaps between the wall and the pipe. Would that make it seem like the pipe is sealed into the wall? Or should I leave a small ring of space around the pipe for a neater finish, maybe even use some sort of ring fitting around it?

It really depends on whether the pipe's heated or not. If you're unsure, I'd recommend filling the space with some spray foam and calling it a day. It'll do a great job at sealing things up without risking any issues.

I appreciate the suggestion! I thought about spray foam, but I'm worried it won't look very good since it's not smooth. My goal is for it to look neat, so I might just leave a little gap around the pipe instead.
