I'm looking to build a new garage that features a guest room on top at my lake property. I recently spent about $5,000 with a local builder to have plans drawn up for the garage. Now, I'm interested in comparing quotes from other contractors, but I'm unsure if it's okay to share these plans with them. Are there any rules around this? Any other advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Check your contract first! If you paid the full amount for the plans, then you should have ownership of them, meaning you can share them with other contractors. Sometimes, there might be restrictions if the builder contributed to the architectural designs, so just double-check your agreement.
That's quite a bit to spend on plans! If the $5,000 was solely for the plans, they should be yours to share. However, if it was more of a deposit towards the overall work, you might need to see who technically owns them by looking closely at your contract.

Yeah, that’s a hefty bill for garage plans! I’d expect a gorgeous design for that price.
