Help! My Son’s Room Smells Musty Despite My Efforts

I'm dealing with a frustrating musty odor in my son's room. I've done quite a bit to resolve it, including installing an HRV system, getting the carpets professionally cleaned, and having moisture readings taken. I even had a thermal imaging expert and a plumber check things out, but they found nothing unusual. I currently have a dehumidifier and work on odor control with strips and vinegar. However, I'm starting to wonder if there could be hidden mold behind the plasterboard (or 'gib' as it's known in New Zealand) even without an obvious leak. I'm really at a standstill – what should I do next?

Did you check under the carpet? Sometimes, even if the floor looks dry now, it could have been damp before. Also, consider if the room is over a basement or crawlspace, as that could be a source of moisture. If it's over a concrete slab, carpets can really trap humidity. Maybe it's worth investigating the insulation or the other side of the wall, just in case there's something hidden.

Exactly! And you might want to pull the carpet back just to be safe. If your house has an attic, check that as well, especially around the boiler. Sometimes insulation can trap moisture too.

Have you considered checking for leaks from above, like the roof or ceiling? Sometimes moisture issues can come from outside. I've heard of people using mold detection dogs; they can be quite effective if you're concerned about hidden mold.

If you haven't already, inspect the closet and flooring for signs of water damage or mold. If there's a bathroom nearby, check the drains or p-trap too. By the way, what's 'gib'? I’m not familiar with that term.

Oh, 'gib' is just what we call plasterboard or drywall here in NZ! And yes, I checked the wardrobes, but there's no visible mold. Just that musty smell.
