I've got this tricky triangular space under my stairs that's really hard to reach. It's just sitting there as an awkward storage spot, but I'd love to transform it into something functional with vertical drawers, and maybe make the lower part a cozy corner for my dogs. I've tried to find contractors, but it's been rough—either they've never seen a space like this or they hit me with crazy quotes without showing any previous work. Has anyone tackled a similar project before? I'm also curious about cost estimates. I assume this won't require a permit since it's not structural, right? Any recommendations for good contractors in the SF Bay area would be a huge help! Thanks in advance!

Custom jobs can really rack up the costs, especially since there aren’t many folks who tackle these kinds of projects. Any decent carpenter or cabinet maker should be able to handle it, but be prepared for steep prices simply due to the unique nature of the work. Expect it to be on the higher end since it's not a common request: might range $8-10K, primarily due to the custom cabinetry.
Talk to a local cabinet shop instead of a general contractor. They can help design what you need, and then either they or a handyman can handle the installation. It's worth looking into!
