Is it really going to cost me thousands to dispose of this dirt and rock myself?

I'm tackling a big project that requires me to dig up around 1500 square feet of dirt, going about 10 inches deep. From my calculations, that adds up to roughly 1250 cubic feet of dirt and rocks, weighing about 63 tons. I found out that my local dump charges $50 per ton, which would come to a total of around $3,150 for disposal. Does this sound right? Is this really the most affordable option, or should I consider giving it away for free? The mix includes dirt, landscape rock, and Bermuda grass roots, so I'm not sure if anyone would actually want it.

Your math looks correct! But before you spend that much, you might want to check out your local landfill's policies. Some places accept clean fill dirt for free, so it's worth a call. Just make sure to separate any sod, as that could incur extra fees. Plus, consider reaching out to landscape companies—they might take it off your hands for free, especially if it's clean fill!

You could also consider posting it online as free fill. There are usually folks looking for soil and landscaping materials, and you'd likely just need to set it out for them to pick up. It’s a win-win! Plus, digging just a bit less could save you some effort; maybe go five inches deep and use that to level your property?

Another thing to think about is the hassle of moving all that dirt yourself. I had a similar experience and had to rent a pickup truck, which took forever to load and unload at the dump. It was exhausting! If you're feeling overwhelmed, you could get quotes from companies that specialize in hauling. It might cost a bit, but worth every penny in saved labor!
