Do I Need to Mud Over Patches When Repainting My Garage?

I recently bought a house, and the garage walls are riddled with holes and dents. The previous owner did some patchwork, but it wasn't up to par. I've gone ahead and used spackle to cover these holes, and I'm planning to sand everything down once the spackle dries. My question is: should I be applying drywall mud to smooth out all the patches so they blend together? I don't want to see those individual patches after priming and painting. I watched a video from Vancouver Carpenter, who mentioned this technique, but I'm curious if it really only applies to larger patches or if it's necessary for the smaller ones I'm dealing with. Thanks for your insights!

Absolutely, you should use a wide layer of mud—or even consider doing a full skim coat. This will really help in blending those patches so they're not noticeable after priming and painting. A skim coat basically means applying a thin layer of mud over the entire area, while a wide layer focuses on those specific patches but gets it all to a uniform finish. Either way, make sure everything is well-sanded after your spackling—especially before applying any paint!

Thanks for the info! Could you briefly explain the difference between a wide layer and a skim coat? Also, I only have knives, no trowel. Do you think I can manage the whole wall or just a big layer?
