How to Remove a Metal Spiral Staircase Safely?

Hey folks! I need some advice on removing a metal spiral staircase from my home that connects the basement to the first floor. The tricky part is the center pole—there's no room to lift the adjustable steps off because it was installed too tall. They actually cut a hole in the wooden support under the second floor to make it fit. I'm looking for suggestions on how to get this thing out without having to cut into more of that supporting wood. I'm hesitant about cutting the beam because of the sparks and fire risks. Any safe tricks or methods you recommend? Thanks!

Just a heads up about your clothes: it's wise to wear something that covers more skin! If you're worried about sparks hitting you, consider wearing long sleeves or using a work apron. Plus, make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby just in case things get a little too heated!

I get where you're coming from with being concerned about cutting the beam. If you can, try loosening any bolts or screws first before going the cutting route. It may save you a lot of hassle if it ends up being removable without major cuts!

One simple solution for the sparks is to use fire blankets—or even an old blanket that you don't mind getting a bit worn out. Just hang it up near where you're cutting so that the sparks hit the blanket rather than anything else. Of course, make sure to clear the area of anything flammable like gas or oil before you start working.
