Can I Install a Pocket Door Flush with the Wall?

I'm currently framing a new wall to create a space for a bathroom and I'm planning to install a pocket door. Is there a downside to setting up the door frame so that the door closes flush against the wall? I'd prefer to skip the small return for jamb studs to keep the wall smooth. Would this cause any issues?

Another option is to put the header into a stud pack on the opposite wall, removing the finish jamb and just putting drywall over it. You’d end up losing about 1/2 inch of the door opening, though. Just something to keep in mind!

To make a pocket door flush with the wall, you'd need a track or caster system that allows the door to align perfectly. It’s doable but might cost a bit more and could be harder to find. Definitely something to think about before you start framing!
