What Makes Hostas So Popular?

I've recently noticed that hostas are becoming incredibly popular, and it got me thinking. I only heard about them for the first time this year, and now they seem to be everywhere! I'm curious why they're so beloved. Are they actually good for pollinators? I'm also not sure how they fit into the garden landscape since they're not native. What's the hype all about?

I have a miniature hosta that the slugs and snails seem to avoid! It's super cute with its curled leaves and it fills the pot by the end of the season. Love how unique it is!

I personally love my six hostas! The flowers are stunning and the bees are all over them. I found that adding some mulch around them keeps the slugs at bay, plus I'm trying a new feed to deter pests. Hoping for the best this year!

I've never seen a hosta flower! What's that like?

I grew up with hostas in my damp, shady garden, and they always felt tropical compared to the rest of northern England. They bring back such nostalgia for me and they’re also quite low-maintenance as long as I keep up with the slug pellets.

Yeah, protecting them from slugs can be a nightmare! Some years, it feels like a losing battle, while other years they're practically showing off how big they’ve grown!

I hear you! My hostas have been almost completely eaten by slugs this year. It's so disappointing!

Hostas are great for creating structure in your garden. Their large, lush leaves look amazing paired with more delicate plants like ferns. Plus, they're just plain beautiful!

Totally agree! I never thought about them as architectural plants before, that’s a good point!

They can be a great sacrificial plant! They keep the pests away from my other plants while coming back year after year. Not the biggest fan myself, though!

Honestly, I don’t have a soft spot for them. If a plant isn’t edible or attracts bees, I’m not interested. But I’ve heard their flowers can attract bumblebees, and they might be edible too!

Yes, hosta flowers do attract bumblebees, so they do have some value for pollinators!

I read that hostas are edible, so they may surprise you!
