What’s the Best Drill for a New Homeowner?

Asked By SunnySky82 On

Hey everyone! I just bought my first house and I'm looking to get a drill for various DIY projects around the place. I've never owned a drill before, so I'm wondering where I should start. Are there specific brands that stand out as better options? Any particular features or things I should avoid? Also, do brand differences really matter, or are most drills pretty similar? I'll be using it for tasks like mounting TVs in the living room and garage, assembling my smith machine with power nut attachments (if that's what they're called), installing a garage door motor, and hanging mirrors or decorations. I appreciate any advice you have! Thanks!

I'd suggest checking out DIY brands that your local hardware store carries. Brands like Milwaukee and DeWalt are popular but can be pricey. Ryobi is great for DIY projects, and you can also find good options from Craftsman at Lowe's or Skil at Menards. Just remember to pick what's in your budget.

Congrats on the new home! A drill/driver combo set is the way to start. Having a dedicated impact driver can save you time when switching bits. I went with Milwaukee’s M12 series and love it! It’s lightweight yet powerful enough for all the jobs you mentioned.

Thanks for clarifying the impact driver vs drill distinction! I thought I was just looking for a drill this whole time.

For a first-time homeowner, I’d say go for Ryobi. They offer a solid lineup of tools at an affordable price. You can grab a combo set that includes a drill, impact driver, and even a reciprocal saw, all in a toolbox. They might not compare to top brands like DeWalt or Milwaukee, but for casual use, they’re totally reliable and won’t break the bank. Plus, they often have sales going on!

That's a really good suggestion! Why do you think Ryobi falls short compared to brands like DeWalt?

Yeah, I noticed the Father's Day sales coming up! Perfect time to buy!

If you are doing a lot of heavy-duty work, I would suggest checking out the Milwaukee M18 for a heavier-duty option. It’s durable and has tons of compatibility across tools. But for average DIY projects, Ryobi should suit you well!

Good to know! I might opt for the M12 since I've heard good things and it sounds manageable for me.

I love my Ryobi tools; they offer great quality for the price. I started out with them for small jobs around my rentals, and now that I have my own home, they’ve been reliable and effective for everything I need.

You’re the third person to recommend Ryobi! I'm convinced, I’ll check them out.
