What Should I Do About Maggots in My Rabbit Poop?

I recently got some rabbit manure from an organic farmer, but unfortunately, it's infested with maggots! There are way more maggots than actual poop, and I'm concerned I'll end up with a swarm of flies soon since I've already added quite a bit to my raised garden beds. I'm hoping to plant soon since I'm late in the season. Does anyone have suggestions on how to deal with this issue?

If your rabbit poop is somewhat dry, try putting it in large black plastic bags and leave them out in the sun. The heat will help reduce the maggot population since they can't survive above 86°F. This is similar to how you would manage compost to curb weed seeds. Just a thought—hope it might help!

That must be a hassle! Maggots can be a result of flies laying eggs in warm, moist rabbit poop. While they help decompose the waste, too many can be a nuisance. I'd suggest turning your compost regularly to disturb them and mixing in some dry materials. You can also bury the poop deeper in the soil if you need to use it soon. A quick fix is to put the affected poop in a bucket of water—this drowns the maggots. But if you're looking for a longer-term solution, turning your compost regularly can help lessen their numbers. Also, mixing the poop with dry materials like straw can balance moisture and reduce flies. Just avoid using fresh poop directly on your garden; composting it first will make it safer and more beneficial for your plants!

Don't stress too much about the maggots—they're actually a part of a healthy ecosystem! As long as you're using this outdoors, having some soldier fly larvae can be beneficial for your compost. They help break down the material and can even speed up plant growth. Just keep the area well-aerated, and you should be fine!
